CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall Civic Complex is running on generator power after a transformer fire on Friday, May 10, 2019.
According to City of Cornwall Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Maureen Adams, after attempts were made to turn the power back on, a transformer at the Complex blew, and the Cornwall Fire Service had to be called. The fire was quickly brought under control.
The Complex was without power during the day on Friday, but power was restored by Monday morning with the help of a generator. The generator is fully powering the facility and will likely be relied upon until a new part can be found for the transformer in eight-to-12 weeks.
Offices at the Complex were closed on Friday, along with other services in the building including the Ed Lumley Arena and the Aquatic Centre.
The ice at the Ed Lumley Arena was scheduled to be removed on Monday regardless of the power outage. The Aquatic Centre remained closed on Monday due to safety concerns, but Mark Boileau, the City’s General Manager of Planning, Development & Recreation said he expected it to be re-opened sometime on Tuesday.
Boileau explained that the City would be responsible for restoring power to the Complex, and not Cornwall Electric. He said that all costs resulting from the outage will be forwarded to the City’s insurance company who will let them know what can be compensated for.
