CORNWALL, Ontario – Starbucks Cornwall held a balloon pop, ball toss and more fun carnival games on Friday, May 31, with proceeds supporting Beyond 21.

“I didn’t know anything about the organization until after we opened, and what the organization does for people who have absolutely no where else to go (for support); it is something that touches my heart,” said Dan White, Cornwall Starbucks Store Manager.

White, who has a passion for supporting Beyond 21, wanted to host something for the local non-profit that is bigger than Starbucks’ regular fundraising Karaoke Nights.

“There’s a lot in this community that needs the support of (local) businesses and that’s one of the reasons I got involved with Starbucks…to reach out to and support (non-profit organizations). That’s one of the things I love about the job,” said White.

Tammy Hood, Volunteer Coordinator/People Connector with Beyond 21, explained that it is individuals like White in Cornwall and SDG, and recognition through events like the Carnival that have allowed the organization to grow.

“We are a non-profit and rely solely on fundraising and grants that we apply for or receive through connections in our community like Dan and Starbucks,” said Hood. “We are really excited for things like this that help us get the word out and ensure that we do have a place to belong in this community and that’s the most important thing.”

At the beginning of May, Beyond 21 announced that they had purchased a new location of operation to call home at 1924 Pitt St. The organization launched a capital fundraising campaign with the goal of reaching $750,000 by May 2020 as they strive to renovate the new location to become the newest, fully accessible facility for adults with development disabilities in the area.

Hood was also informing attendees about Cornwall Food Fest 2019, the largest fundraising event in support of Beyond 21.

“This year is no different (than last) and it will be bigger and better than ever,” said Hood. “We are proud to introduce a new event this year as well running inside the Cornwall Food Fest called the Cornwall Truck Tow, which was just launched last week. We are challenging teams of 10 very strong individuals to band together and raise $1,000 per team, that’s $100 per person, for the privilege and bragging rights of towing a pumper truck…graciously provided by the Cornwall Fire Department, 100 ft. up (the street).”
