CORNWALL, Ontario – The Canadian Barge Builders company, based in Cornwall, is helping ship new floating homes down the St. Lawrence River to the Greater Toronto Area.
The first home was sent down on one of their barges on Tuesday, June 4 from Cornwall Harbour. The home was built by ilo, a Napierville, QC based company and will be delivered to Bluffer’s Park Marina, a floating home community in Scarborough.
“There seems to be quite a demand for floating homes,” said Drake Cartier, President of Canadian Barge Builders. “Either waterfront property is too expensive, or it isn’t available.”
The home is two stories and is about 1,000 sq. ft. of floor space.
Cartier said that Canadian Barge Builders will be sending down another floating home in two weeks, and plan for another two weeks after that. In all, as many as 30 floating homes are expected to be sent down the St. Lawrence and will be sold according to demand.
