ALEXANDRIA, Ontario – Matthew Roy is the new fire chief for the Township of North Glengarry. He was appointed to his position by Council on June 10 and will assume the role immediately. He is replacing former Fire Chief Patrick Gauthier, who resigned from this position earlier this month.
“The Township of North Glengarry is pleased to announce that Matthew is our new fire chief. He is a natural leader, with more than 19 years of experience in fire services. He has grown through the ranks as a volunteer firefighter, training officer, District Chief and most recently, Deputy Chief. He brings with him extensive knowledge and experience in both fire services and general management skills,” said the Township of North Glengarry’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Sarah Huskinson.
Matthew was integral in the development and implementation of a fire services training program, as outlined by the Ontario Fire Marshalls Office. Working alongside former Fire Chief Patrick Gauthier, he helped to modernize our fire department and to streamline our training programs so that our firefighters are better equipped to work together as a team and to deal with emergencies. Matthew was instrumental in the procurement of a new communications system which will enable our firefighters to stay better connected during emergencies.
“Matthew has been a mentor to many firefighters who look to him for guidance and support. His natural leadership abilities will serve him well in his new role as Chief. I am looking forward to working with Matthew as part of our Senior Management Team and to seeing him continue to grow as a leader and a key member of our team,” said Huskinson.
In his new position Matthew will be responsible for more than 60 firefighters, working out of three fire stations, located in Alexandria, Maxville and Apple Hill. He is also responsible for training, fire prevention and emergency response measures.
“On behalf of Council, I want to congratulate Matthew on his appointment as North Glengarry’s Fire Chief. We have confidence that Matthew will continue to provide excellent service and commitment to the Fire Department and community as he has for many years”, said North Glengarry Mayor Jamie MacDonald.
