LONG SAULT, Ontario – SDG OPP released a statement on Monday, June 17 that officers are continuing to search for a scuba diver that went missing nearly a week ago during the morning hours of Tuesday, June 11.
The search for the diver continued throughout the weekend with OPP Underwater Search and Recovery Unit at the location, with assistance from SDG OPP Marine Unit and the OPP Helicopter.
Officers remain at the scene near Lock 21 on MacDonell Island in South Stormont Township along the St. Lawrence River.
Preliminary investigation suggested that just before 9 a.m. on June 11, a diver returned to shore and his diving partner, for reasons under investigation, did not resurface.
Local police forces (CPS and OPP) conducted search efforts alongside various organizations last week, including South Stormont Fire Services, two Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) boats, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Canadian Coast Guard and the Joint Rescue Coordination Center from CFB Trenton with its helicopter.
As the investigation continues SDG OPP requests that the public to continue to avoid the area.
The identity of the missing diver has still not been released.
