CORNWALL, Ontario – After 111 days of living in relocation sites, residents of Chartwell Chateau Cornwall were welcomed home with open arms by staff and family members at the Amelia St. location on Monday, July 29.

“We are so excited to have our residents back at home,” said Chateau Cornwall General Manager Jasmin Parker, who is also happy to see all staff members as well. “It’s nice to have our cooks back cooking and our servers back serving, doing what they love…and the building looks absolutely beautiful, it’s all newly renovated.”

Chateau Cornwall underwent extensive renovations following a flooding that occurred on April 9 this year. Chartwell representatives were not able to comment on the total cost of renovations at the time of publication.

“Unfortunately, while we were having a suite renovated, a sprinkler pipe was hit which caused water damage to the building (on April 9),” said Amy Steele, Chartwell Director of Regional Operations. “Residents were all evacuated safely.”

Steele commended the quick action of Cornwall Emergency Services and Cornwall Transit personnelle who were on scene and assisting during the swift evacuation.

“I think every event we learn (from) but we were very prepared,” said Steele in regards to the evacuation and relocating of residents. “This home takes going over emergency response very seriously…when it came to evacuating, they did a phenomenal job.”

Steele thanked all staff of Nav Centre and McConnell Manor as both facilities took in residents based on care needs. She also thanked families who invited their relatives home during the renovation period.

With the help of Chartwell regional staff and managers, residents were all greeted and given a flower upon arrival before being escorted to their rooms where they were given assistance with unpacking their belongings. Afterwards, residents could attend a special BBQ lunch in honour of their return.

Resident Cathy Walsh told Seaway News she was happy to return after a lovely and accommodating stay at Nav Centre and that there’s no place quite like home.
