CORNWALL, Ontario – Kelsey Catherine Schmitz is the federal candidate for the New Democratic Party (NDP) for the riding of Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry.
In an interview with Seaway News Schmitz outlined some of her platform.
“I believe in progressive values and taking care of the people around you,” she said. “I believe we need to take care of each other. I definitely want to be focused on sustainable living, access to good jobs and affordable housing.”
Schmitz outlined how she believed that her party was the best suited to form the next government.
“I think the NDP is focused on helping people,” she said. “People shouldn’t be focused on where their next meal or medication is coming from. The NDP will do a better job of listening to Canadians.”
Schmitz said she wanted to run in this election to give back to her community.
“I was looking for an opportunity to give back to the community,” she said. “A lot of people from our region made me who I am, teachers, mentors, and members of my parent’s church who were like a second family. The big reason I wanted to run was to give back to those people.”
Schmitz was born in Cornwall and raised in Newington and Ingleside. Her great-grandfather founded the Rochon-et-fils butcher shop in Cornwall.
She has spent her career in education. She earned a Ph.D. in Education with a focus on Society, Culture and Literacies from the University of Ottawa.
She currently is a program manager for Expeditions to Communities at Students on Ice Foundation, an organization dedicated to promoting experiential learning for students in the Arctic and Antarctic regions.
