CORNWALL, Ontario – The City of Cornwall and Cornwall Fire Services (CFS) reminded residents to be safe on the St. Lawrence River this summer.
This comes after CFS helped to rescue two people from the St. Lawrence River on Monday, Aug. 12 after their boat capsized near the Seaway International Bridge.
The boat collided with a barge in the water near the bridge. The barge was in the water as a part of the ongoing effort to dismantle the in-water piers of the old Seaway International Bridge.
According to Fire Chief Pierre Voisine, water conditions in that part of the river are more dangerous than normal at this time of year due to the unseasonably high amounts of water out flowing from the Moses-Saunders Dam.
“Boaters must be more cautious in this area, especially when travelling at night,” said Voisine. “In light of the high water levels we’re experiencing this year, safety precautions are even more important.”
Voisine said that there were two older passengers on the boat at the time, but that there were no injuries.
Chief Voisine reminds boaters to always use their lights when travelling at night and that all passengers should use a life jacket.
