CORNWALL, Ontario – Roy and Cher’s Rescue Farm has received $2,500 from PetSmart Charities of Canada to support their trap and release (TNR) efforts in Cornwall and SD&G.
Angie Parker, Director of Roy and Cher’s Rescue Farm said that the money would specifically be used to help support several cat colonies the rescue is currently taking care of.
She said that Roy and Cher’s is currently focusing their TNR efforts on one cat colony in Long Sault and two in the City of Cornwall. She said that the total amount of cats in these three colonies is over 30.
“Spaying and neutering stray cats is very important to keep the cat population down,” said Parker. “Ninety per cent of feral cats are not adoptable and this way, they will not reproduce. It will decrease their mating behaviours as well, like late night yodelling and spraying.”
The City of Cornwall is currently considering a report from their administration that recommends a strict TNR policy.
Under the City’s proposed by-law, all owned cats would need to be spayed or neutered and kept indoors.

The by-law would also set aside $40,000 annually to help low income residents de-sex their cats, and to help cover the cost of de-sexing feral or community cats.
