CORNWALL, Ontario – Recognized by the United Nations on Friday, Oct. 11, this year’s International Day of the Girl is embodying the theme GirlForce: Unscripted and Unstoppable.

The City of Cornwall is inviting girls aged 8 to 12 to participate in a number of activities at the Royal Canadian Legion from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 11, hoping to inspire young locals.

“Cornwall’s Day of the Girl will feature local women who have achieved success in their fields and women who are trailblazing along their chosen paths. Girls will be introduced to scientists, business people, athletes, and many more. Mayor Bernadette Clement will begin the evening, which will also include a free meal, prize giveaways, and hands-on experiences at about 20 booths,” read a City of Cornwall press release.

The evening is set to feature a self-defense workshop, interactive kiosks, introductions to non-traditional careers for women and much more.

“Whether it’s meeting a first responder, trying a new sport, or learning from an engineer or construction worker, our goal is to inspire girls and remind them how unstoppable they are,” said Monique Viau, an event volunteer. “We’re looking forward to welcoming girls from all over the region, including Akwesasne, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry.”

To participate, girls are invited to register at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/journee-internationale-de-la-fille-day-of-the-girl-tickets-64982765200. Girls must be accompanied by a parent.
