ONTARIO – The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a recall warning for a long list of beef and veal products.

The wide ranging recall was issued on Oct. 3 after E. coli was detected in some of the products.

“Industry is recalling various raw beef and raw veal products from the marketplace due to possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination.  Consumers should not consume and distributors, retailers and food service establishments such as hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals and nursing homes should not sell or use the recalled products described below,” reads a statement from the CFIA.

Retailers and wholesalers in Ontario and Quebec have been affected with the contaminated meats being distributed primarily through Food Basics, Metro, Alpha Meat Packers Ltd. and Globe Meats Fresh Market and Grill.

The CFIA states that recalled items should be returned to the seller where they were purchased. E. coli contaminated food might not look different, but can cause nausea, vomiting, mild to severe abdominal cramps and watery to bloody diarrhea. E. coli can also cause permanent kidney damage and death in cases of severe illness.
