CORNWALL, Ontario – Inuk singer and songwriter Susan Aglukark will be performing at Aultsville Theatre in Cornwall on Nov. 16.
Aglukark is perhaps best known for her song “O Siem” from her 1995 album This Child. She has been nominated for multiple Juno Awards and has won three.
Aglukark says that her concert in Cornwall will showcase some old songs, some new, and some for those who love Christmas too.
“It will be kind of everything,” Aglukark said in an interview with Seaway News. “Over the course of the show, we will be introducing some of the new stuff and there will be some Christmas songs.”
Aglukark has a new album which is scheduled to be released in 2020. In her interview with Seaway News she reflected on how she, and the world around her has changed over the course of her career.
“Over the 26 years since my career started many things have changed in Canada with the relationship to the Inuit,” she said. “We are living in a time when a truth is being told.”
“My generation was so entrenched in the traditional method of learning, we almost lost the indigenous way of learning,” Aglukark explained. “the stories of indigenous peoples, these are the stories we should learn in schools across Canada.”
Aglukark also had some advice to young indigenous artists.
“Don’t be afraid to be yourself,” she said. “Be able to say ‘I don’t know.’ Don’t second guess yourself as an indigenous Canadian person. Don’t feel like you have to prove you belong where you are. I hope this is the last generation that feels like they don’t belong.”
Susan Aglukark is being presented at Aultsville Theatre through Harmony Concerts.
