CORNWALL, Ontario – The third annual Soup’s On! in support of the Cornwall and District Alzheimer’s Society took place on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at the Cornwall Civic Complex. More than 500 guests were expected to attend the event and enjoy 16 different flavours of soups on a cold January day.
For $10, guests had a chance to get one 12oz bowl or three four ounce cups.
Some of the soups on offer included a Taco Soup, from the Cornwall Police Service, a Pizza Soup from the OPP, Mock Turtle Soup from Upper Canada Village, West highland Scotch Broth from Château Cornwall, Kermit’s Family Secret pea & ahm soup from SDG Tae Kwon Do and more.
As in previous years, there were judges on hand to pick their favourite soups and the public were invited to vote on which they felt deserved the “People’s Choice Award”.
In addition to the soups, guests also had the chance to win free tickets to Alzheimer’s Society conferences as well as the chance to be a judge at next year’s event.
Community members living with dementia and their family members participated in the event, with some becoming volunteers.
“What this event is all about is the community celebrating the community,” said Shelley Vaillancourt, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Society Cornwall and District. “We try to reduce the stigma of dementia in the community and this event does that it spades.”
After filling up on soup, guests were invited to St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre (SJCCC) to fill up on some knowledge about dementia. Josée Desrochers of the Alzheimer’s Society made a presentation to the guests in attendance about the stigma around dementia.
“The goal is to spread information on dementia to caregivers and family members and to help teach them how they can support their loved one,” said Andrea Secord, Resident and Family Relations Advisor at SJCC.
The judges’ choice for the top soup in the Professionals category was McConnell Retirement Residence with their sausage gumbo. The Community category winner was the OPP with their Pizza soup, which also won the People’s Choice Award.
