Five arrested in Tuesday morning drug bust

CORNWALL, Ontario – On the morning of Jan. 21, 2020, members of the Cornwall Police Service (CPS) Street Crime Unit, Criminal Investigation Division, Community Patrol and the Cornwall Emergency Response Team executed two drug warrants in connection to an ongoing drug investigation. The warrants were executed at a Cumberland St. residence, as well as an Edward St. residence, and resulted in five individuals being taken into custody.

During a search of the Cumberland St. residence, police located a quantity of cocaine and illicit cannabis, as well as a replica rifle, knife and quantity of Canadian and American currency.

The combined street value of the drugs and currency is estimated to be over $47,000.

Steven Mitchell, 35, of Cornwall, was subsequently taken into custody and charged with the following. He remained in custody to await a bail hearing.

• Possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine
• Possession of illicit cannabis
• Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
• Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000

During the search of the Edward St. residence, police located a quantity of drugs, including cocaine, methamphetamine pills, and a quantity of unknown pills. A taser was also located in the residence. The unknown pills have subsequently been submitted to Health Canada for analysis. As a result, no total street value of the seized drugs can be determined at this time.

The following individuals were taken into custody, charged accordingly, and released to appear in court on Feb. 25, 2020:

David Gaudet, 45, of Cornwall:

• Possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine
• Possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine
• Unauthorized possession of a weapon
• Breach of prohibition order x three
• Breach of probation order x two (for possessing a weapon and failing to keep the peace)
• Breach of recognizance (for possessing a weapon)

Jonathan Hall, 31, of Cornwall:

• Possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine
• Possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine
• Unauthorized possession of a weapon
• Breach of probation (for failing to keep the peace)

Christina Smoke, 46, of Cornwall:

• Possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine
• Possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine
• Unauthorized possession of a weapon

Jennifer Burles, 33, of Cornwall:

• Possession for the purpose of trafficking methamphetamine
• Possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine
• Unauthorized possession of a weapon

“The Cornwall Police Service is pleased to see the successful execution of both drug warrants,” said Inspector Chad Maxwell of the Field Operations Division. “We are committed to protecting our community from illicit drugs, and will continue to use all available resources and investigative techniques to prevent these drugs from getting into the hands of our youth and vulnerable members of our community.”
