UNITED COUNTIES of SD&G, Ontario – The Ontario government is continuing the tradition of waving fishing licenses for Family Day weekend.

From Feb. 15 to Feb. 17 residents of Stormont, Dundas and South Glengarry will be able to fish for free and an Outdoor Card will not be required.

This is the first of four Family Fishing weekends that are planned for 2020. The province of Ontario also plans to wave licensing fees for fishing for the May 9-10 weekend, June 20-21 and July 4-12.

“Licence-free fishing events are a great way to get kids hooked on fishing,” said Jim McDonell, MPP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. “I encourage everyone to attend the 2nd Annual Legion Ice Fishing Derby in Iroquois or the Alexandria Ice Fishing Derby, both on Saturday this Family Day weekend.”

The Alexandria Derby will take place on Saturday, Feb. 15 starting at 9 a.m. The organizers of the event are offering $45,000 in different prizes for participants.

The Iroquois Derby is also on Saturday, and is being organized by the Iroquois Legion. The angler who brings in the heaviest fish can win the $100 prize.
