Summer Students Gain Valuable Work Experience with the RRCA

SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario – From building boardwalks to planting trees and planning community events, 14 summer students, through the Canada Summer Jobs program, are helping the Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA) deliver its programs and services while gaining valuable on-the-job experience.

Jamie Would is one of them. A science graduate from Queen’s University with a specialization in environmental biology, her summer position as Communications and Stewardship Assistant at the RRCA is providing her with opportunities to apply her knowledge in new ways.

“I’ve learned so much in only a few months. It’s an amazing opportunity to work both independently and as part of a caring and amicable team. From tree planting and field work to organizing events, this summer has been full of new and exciting experiences,” says Would. “I’ve learned how to organize community-oriented events from start to finish. It’s incredibly rewarding to see an initiative come to life.”

Would is currently working on biodiversity data collection for the RRCA’s Cooper Marsh Conservation Area, as well as a scavenger hunt for the RRCA’s annual family fishing week event taking place from July 3 to 11.

“The scavenger hunt is a new twist to this popular event,” she says. “We are encouraging families to go fishing together during Ontario’s licence-free fishing week, and to try catching and identifying a select list of fish for a chance to win prizes. It’s a great way to spend time in nature together, to try out a fun sport, and to learn about the area’s native fish species.”

Families can find out how to participate in the scavenger hunt by going to rrca.on.ca/FishWeek.

Secondary and post-secondary students interested in applying for a summer position with the RRCA next year are encouraged to check the RRCA’s social media and website at rrca.on.ca, where summer employment opportunities will be posted in the new year.
