Victor Garry Ernst
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Victor Garry Ernst surrounded by his loving family at Woodland Villa, Long Sault on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at the age of 92 years. Beloved husband of Pamela Ann Ernst (nee McClure) for over 67 years. Loving father of Alexis Ernst and Richard Ernst (Sharon). Proud grandfather of Andrew (Lisa) and Kimberley, and great grandfather of Ellie. Brother of Stanley, and uncle to beloved nieces and nephews in Canada and around the world. Predeceased by his parents Arnold Albert Ernst & Lillian Nowell Ernst (nee Cowlam), half-sister Catherine, brother Herbert and sister Kathleen.
He was “Garry” to all who knew him, but simply Gaz to his nieces and grandchildren. If you asked, “How are you?” he would always answer, “All the better for seeing you!” And he was.
Garry was proud to serve his country for more than 30 years, as an Officer and Marine Engineer in the Canadian Armed Forces. After his career in the Navy, he moved to Cornwall to teach engineering students at St. Lawrence College for 10 years. In retirement, he continued to be active and serve his community where you may have seen him as the Chair of the Ontario Senior Games, Cornwall chapter, member of the Cornwall Arts Board or perhaps delivering Meals-on-Wheels.
He loved music and playing sports, but most of all he loved being with friends and family, and experiencing new places and cultures with, Pamela, his travelling companion of more than 67 years. Together they visited more countries than you can count, rode railroads and camels, slept in treetops and floating huts, touched and were touched by the people they met throughout their lives – be they family, friends, colleagues or strangers.
He loved and respected the people in his life, and those lucky enough to have known him respected and cared for him in return.
His was a life well lived.
A Memorial Service will be held at Trinity Anglican Church, 105 Second Street West, Cornwall, ON K6J 1G4, on Friday, July 21, at 1:30 PM. For those who are unable to attend, the service will be streamed on Facebook at facebook.com/saintlawrenceparish
A reception will follow in the church hall after the service for an appropriate celebration of Garry’s life. If desired donations can be made in Garry’s memory to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
