How to find your LOCAL News

Over the past 10 years, many people accessed local news from Seaway News through social media or by Googling to find what you need.

Last week, two of the biggest tech companies in the world – Google and Meta which owns Facebook and Instagram – said they would be removing all news from Canadian outlets from their platforms.

It’s part of an ongoing dispute about whether Google and Meta should pay for the content they receive from media companies like Cornwall Seaway News and Cornwall Express.

When you click on one of our articles on social media, those companies gain valuable insight into your buying power – information that makes them billions.

And they provide “free” advertising to all – making it more difficult for media companies to convince business to pay for ads to fund their work.

So, the federal government recently passed the Online News Act which requires Google and Meta to negotiate deals with Canadian media companies for their content.

They don’t like that idea, so, like a kid on a school yard, they’re taking their ball and going home.

Soon, you’ll be seeing wording like this when you try to access our stories on Facebook or Google.

Big Tech may block local news but we’re not going anywhere.

Here’s how you can still find the LOCAL NEWS THAT’S IMPORTANT TO YOU:

You can go DIRECTLY TO OUR WEBSITE and bookmark our page www.cornwallseawaynews.com or our E-EDITION (a PDF of the full paper) is available on our web site with past issues.

September 15, Seaway News is celebrating 38 years of community journalism.

We could not have done it without your support for local journalism over the 38 years. It’s our pledge to you there is lots more to come.
