SOUTH STORMONT, Ontario – After three arduous months of construction, Benjamin de Haan, Director of Transportation and Planning Services for the Counties says that construction on the Long Sault roundabout has officially wrapped up.

“The project took us a couple weeks longer to finish up,” said de Haan. “We had some challenges with utilities to be relocated.”

While the actual road work is now complete, the wait continues for lighting to be set up at the Mille Roches and Moulinette zones. de Haan says that the Counties put in their request for the work last summer, but faced some setbacks in planning for hydro.

Just last month, two accidents occurred at the new roundabout, with some questioning whether the lighting was to blame.

“During that period, it was still a construction site, which was under control of the contractors,” said de Haan. Unable to comment on the underlying cause of the collisions, de Haan said that proper lighting would help ensure safety, with a temporary generator having been installed at the Moulinette site.

Aside from the lighting, de Haan says that the only remaining task is the site’s landscaping; including concrete work on the middle medians – expected to resume in the spring.
