White Ribbon Campaign continues
The Optimist Club of Cornwall have announced the theme of this year's Optimist Convention.

CORNWALL, Ontario – As November draws to a close, so, too does Woman Abuse Prevention Month. This province wide campaign focuses on women’s fundamental right security within her community; without fear of violence.

Spousal violence is one of the most common forms of violence facing women in Canada. However, the province is hoping to change this statistic through outreach and education.

While November is the official month of recognition, many campaigns extend into December, wrapping up on Dec. 10 or National Human Rights Day.

Executive Director of Sexual Assault and Support Services, Angela Vinet says that awareness on topics like consent and abuse are growing, thanks to programs now offered in schools.

“We had Shine the Light going on throughout the whole month of November, as well as the White Ribbon Campaign, which is the men’s movement to end violence against women,” said Vinet.

She says that the White Ribbon Campaign is focused more on high schools, where she and her colleagues talk to students about healthy relationships, and the role men can play.

“I think if we can get in and provide the education at that point in their lives, we’re going to see a shift in years to come,” said Vinet. “Prevention is key, and that’s why we try to do this kind of stuff.”

The White Ribbon Campaign concludes on Wednesday, Dec. 6; Canada’s National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. For more information, visit the official website at whiteribbon.ca
