CORNWALL, Ontario – In partnership with Google and the Great Waterway, two summer students will be embarking on a 22 km hike, capturing the beauty of the city’s waterfront trails.
The new project, called Google Trekker, aims to give people a closer glimpse into more remote locations across Ontario. With a 45-lb backpack in-tow, trekkers are able to capture a 360-degree panoramic image of their surroundings.
Denis Lalonde oversees the City’s Geographic Information Systems, and had been itching to get this mission off the ground for a while now.
“We’re pleased to finally be expanding off the streets,” said Lalonde. “We’re hoping it really entices people to use the bike path.”
Linda Wilson is Tourism Coordinator with Cornwall and the Counties, and sits on the board of directors with the Great Waterway. After hearing that the Great Waterway had been in touch with Google, she was asked to help undertake the project.
“When we heard this was happening, they asked if we would map our section for them,” said Wilson. “We jumped on it.”
Spanning from Bay of Quinte to Cornwall and the Counties, the Great Waterway portion of the project will wrap up at Boundary Road with another tourism region taking over afterwards.
