CORNWALL, Ontario – The Optimist Club of Cornwall held it’s second Mother’s Day brunch on Sunday, May 13 at the Optimist Club clubhouse.

“We have a huge brunch, we have live entertainment and your mother gets a free flower,” said Terry Muir, incoming President of the Optimist Club. “We’re just trying to make the day feel special — they deserve it.”

The brunch was from 10 a.m. to noon and flowers were provided by Roys Florist. Ticket prices were $20 for adults and $5 for children.

“This is our second year and we were pretty successful last year, so we decided to do it again,” said Muir. The Optimist Club is hoping to make the brunch an annual event.

Kathryn Brunton, an Optimist Club member of about 10 years, attended the brunch with her daughter Michaela. She didn’t have any plans for the rest of the day besides relaxing.

“As long as I’m not the one doing anything, and they’re cooking and cleaning,” said Brunton with a laugh. “It’s usually very quiet, so this is just perfect.”

According to Muir, one of the biggest challenges for the Optimist Club is raising awareness about where they are located.

“We put on a number of events at the clubhouse here, but the hardest thing is getting people to know where it is,” said Muir. “We have a beautiful clubhouse. Holding events gets the word out so people know where we are.”

One of the upcoming events for the Optimist Club will be the RCMP Musical Ride on May 26 at Lamaroux Park. The Club’s event calendar can be found atoptimistclubofcornwall.org.
