GLENGARRY, Ontario – Marshall Wilson, 19, is running for Ward 9 Trustee for the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB). The Glengarry District High School student acted as the 2017-2018 Student Trustee for the UCDSB.

“I’ve really fallen in love with the board,” said Wilson. “Also education is just a passion of mine. I feel very strongly about it and it’s importance in our society. It’s so important to be educated and active learners throughout our entire lives.”

Wilson is planning on studying Global and International Studies at Carleton University in the fall, majoring in Global Development. He is confident that he will be able to balance school and the position as Trustee, and is planning on commuting home often to see his family.

“I’ve talked to my professors about the course load,” said Wilson. “I have a really good idea of what to expect with how many hours a week.”

So far for his campaign, Wilson has launched a Facebook page, released an ad and has spoken with The Glengarry News. He is now working on videos and putting up a website.

“I think I’m going to have a different outlook on a lot of the situations at the board table,” said Wilson. “Maybe sometimes a little bit more innovative, a little bit more creative.”

Wilson believes that he has a good chance of being elected. He believes that he is honest, experienced and passionate about the position. As Student Trustee, he built working relationships with all of the UCDSB board members. He thinks he would have an advantage at the board table but realizes that he may be at a disadvantage during his campaign because of his age. He is confident that once he speaks with community members and participates in debates, his passion and experience will become more obvious.

“I’d never want to run for a position that I can’t fully commit myself to, because it would just be a waste of that position,” said Wilson. “So I wanted to make sure I could serve it to the fullest before I put my name in.”
