The Cornwall Seaway News picked up two awards at the Ontario Community News Paper’s (OCNA) conference on Friday, April 20.
Also at the OCNA Annual General Meeting held Thursday, Rick Shaver was elected 2nd VP of the OCNA Board of Directors.
Recognition at Business Excellence Awards
Seaway News picked up 3 awards last weekend in Toronto at the Ontario Community Newspaper 2018 Business Excellence Awards Banquet,
representing more than 300 community newspapers. General Excellence Awards recognize outstanding overall achievement in the community press. First, second, and third place winners were awarded in editorial,production and sales categories.T. The General Excellence competition helps newspapers determine their strengths and weaknesses, gives them a comparison with other newspapers, provides staff with a pat on the back, and shows them areas in which they can improve. Premier Awards were also handed out during the dinner banquet/award ceremony.“Community Newspapers – The Heart of the Matter” was the theme.
Best Vertical Product
Cornwall Living won First Place. The award recognizes the product/company’s use of existing staff, current and new advertisers, expanded business opportunities, potential as revenue generator, quality editorial mix, and value to community. The judges comments included “Diverse topics, Photos were very good quality and worked well with the content, Polished look and while the stories were hyper local.
Best Creative Ad
Our entry L.A.Forgues special anniversary was a 2 page spread took second place. Criteria included to the newspaper making the best use of artwork, art/graphic service and/or photographs in the design of a single (or series of up to three advertisement(s) for a customer during the contest period).
In-House Promotion
Our entry won honourable mention . We submitted a series of our sales team doing self promotions. The promotion of a newspaper’s own business is, of course, very important. Much can be learned about a newspaper’s advertising and production department by looking at the material they produce promoting themselves and their newspaper. This award will recognize the best advertisement promoting your newspaper, in print and/or online.
