Pitt Street Garden sets roots

CORNWALL, Ontario – Daniel Marion of Pitt Street Gardens hosted a tree care workshop this Saturday, Apr. 22 in partnership with Transition Cornwall.

Marion hosted a similar event last year with the support of Transition Cornwall and Tree Action Arbre, and because of its popularity, he decided to do it again this year.

The workshop provided an opportunity to have any tree-related questions answered by an industry professional.

The session featured a live demonstration of the best-practises in pruning as well as tree care and general maintenance. Discussing the importance of removing dead, diseased and broken branches in the early stages, Marion also offered some valuable insight on healthy growth.

“You want to try to balance the tree out as evenly as possible – you’re cleaning it away from any inner competition,” said Marion.

Later, tree enthusiasts observed an installation, where Marion pointed out common mistakes and how to correct them. Questions were welcomed, with many guests anxious to use their newfound knowledge in their own tree planting efforts.

“In starting Pitt Street Garden, we’re working to build a CSA, or community supported agriculture – it’s a food box program,” said Marion.

The idea behind Pitt Street Gardens is harvesting a full variety of seasonal vegetables, making them more readily available.
