CORNWALL, Ontario – Over 30 kids piled into Cornwall’s Marina 200 for the Kids and Cops Fishing Derby this Saturday, Sept. 30.
The event was born out of a partnership between the Cornwall Police Association and the Police Association of Ontario, encouraging aspiring anglers to try out the sport for themselves. Through sponsorships with Bob Izumi and Canadian Tire, each child was provided a fishing rod and tackle kit.
“The kids really enjoy it – they look forward to it,” said Const. Patrick Huygen. “They’re happy they get to go fishing, because some may not have otherwise had that opportunity.”
The smiles were as bright as the sunshine, as parents and police helped kids reel in some fun. With slightly cooler temperatures, the fish were biting, and the kids were having a ball.
“I really like fishing,” said six-year-old Miki Emudluk, determined to catch a big fish.
“It’s a fun event – we enjoy planning it,” said Huygen. “We’re not experts by any means, we just enjoy giving the kids the opportunity to teach the kids the basics of fishing.”
