CORNWALL, Ontario – The annual Parkinson SuperWalk took place this Saturday, Sept. 9 at the Civic Complex, with people coming out in droves to take part in the fundraising event.
Shannon Harrison is in charge of information and referral for Parkinson Canada and says that this has been the most successful year to date, bringing in over $9,000 for research, education, and awareness.
“This is the largest group of walkers we’ve had, and we were lucky enough to have an awesome, energetic group,” said Harrison.
More than 25 Canadians are diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease every day, and this number is expected to double by 2031. While those affected can greatly benefit from various treatments, there is currently no known cure for Parkinson’s.
“The majority of the walkers have either been directly impacted by Parkinson’s, or have friends or family that have the disease,” said Harrison. “There are also people who walk in memory of a loved one.”
Parkinson SuperWalk is the largest national fundraising event for Parkinson Canada, with roughly 10,000 people taking part in walks across the country. The national event is now in its 27th year – for more information about the Parkinson SuperWalk, check out their website.
