CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall celebrated International Day of the Girl with special guest speakers and events held at La Citadelle high school on Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018.

This was the seventh year that the event was organized in Cornwall and the organizers hoped too see as many girls participate as there had been in previous years. Girls aged 8 to 16 were invited to attend along with their parents.

There were seven different workshops for the girls to participate in including drumming, Build like a Girl with Habitat for Humanity, 3D printing with Mad Makery, a spa workshop, a self-defense workshop with Freedom Tae Kwon Do and a media and TV workshop with YourTV.

There were also special guest speakers such as Bereaved Families of Ontario – Cornwall, author Melanie Willard and more. There was also an informational workshop for parents.

Organizer Nadia Seguin spoke to the importance of the event.

“It is to prepare the girls for the future,” she said. “To teach them about their lives and what they can do.”

International Day of the Girl has been celebrated since 2012 and is meant to raise awareness amongst men and women about the strength of female voices, advocate for their rights and raise their position in society worldwide.
