CORNWALL, Ontario – The Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) has announced that it has awarded a contract for the demolishment of the in water bridge piers in Cornwall.

The piers are the last remaining remnants of the old Seaway International Bridge which was closed and began to be demolished in 2013.

FBCL has awarded the pier demolishment contract to Bronte Construction, an Oakville based construction company.

“FBCL has never wavered in its commitment to complete the demolition, but funding concerns identified early in the construction phases of the new bridge meant we had to fund the project out of internal funding sources,” said Micheline Dubé, FBCL’s President and CEO.

FBCL claims that in addition to having the most competitive bid, Bronte Construction has also committed to having 15 percent of the value of the contract come from local resources from the Mohawk community.

There are three remaining in water piers, in addition to one pier on the shore on the Cornwall side of the river that will remain standing. The in water piers will not be completely removed, but instead will be reduced to two meters in hieght above the water level out of concern for the local fish habitat.
