CORNWALL, Ontario – Bikers pedalled away from Lamoureux Park around 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 16 towards Archie’s for ice cream. The third annual Sunset Cycle, hosted by the Cornwall Outdoor Club, attracted its biggest crowd yet.
“We’ve always had good weather,” said Kevin O’Rourke, an event organizer. “The past three years, we’ve always lucked out and had nice weather like this.”
According to O’Rourke, the free event encourages the community to walk, cycle and use public transportation. This year, it was a part of the Walk and Roll Month with Transition Cornwall+.
“The whole month is about celebrating all things walking and rolling, for fun, fitness and function,” said Chantal Lalonde of the Eastern Ontario Health Unit. “And this is obviously for fun.”
Earlier this month, Transition Cornwall+ screened a movie about the advantages of cycling versus driving a car, and Bike Centric held a workshop to inform the community about bicycle maintenance.
The last events of the Walk and Roll Month will be taking place on Thursday, June 21 for the Summer Solstice this year. Lalonde said the day will start with tai chi at 5:00 a.m. and then a picnic in the evening at 5:30 p.m., both at Lamoureux Park. The picnic will be followed by a guided walk through the Eco Gardens at 7 p.m. On the same day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Cornwall Interfaith Partnership will be celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day at the Native North American Travelling College.
“We’re going to be enjoying it from sunrise to sunset,” said Lalonde.
