Betty Trip (Meighan)
Friday, February 20th, 1925 – Wednesday, March 31st, 2021
With a mix of joy and sadness, we share with you the peaceful death of Betty Marie (née Meighan) Trip at the Cornwall Community Hospital on Wednesday, March 31, 2021, at 96 years. Betty had a deep unfaltering Christian Faith; she was ready to enter her heavenly home.
Betty was born in St. Catharines On. February 20, 1925, of Tommy and Bessie Meighan (Smith), and predeceased by her siblings Donald Meighan, Leona Tracey and Ferne Jeffery-MacIntosh.
Betty often spoke of her love to sing songs and hymns at church and community events in her early years and continued singing, bringing comfort and joy to many. She will be remembered for her sense of humour, enjoying a joke, and the love of laughter. Her fantastic memory was matched by none!
She first married Trooper Hedley (Pete) Bannan. Pete did not return from the war, leaving her widowed at a young age.
In time she met a shy young man named Borge Hansen Trip (Bob). They fell in love, and Mom shared the story of Dad proposing to her – saying “he needed new shoes” but mostly spoke of their love for one another.
Never knowing they would eventually live in Cornwall, two nights of their honeymoon were spent there on their way to Montreal. Fate was calling.
Betty and Bob’s life took them to various locations, Winnipeg, St. Catharines Sarnia, Kitchener, Toronto, Ottawa, and arriving in Cornwall in the mid-seventies. During this journey, it brought them their much-loved children, Candace (Candy Trip), Elwood (Dr. Mark Elwood), Pennie Trip Lavoie, Jeffery Trip (Kathy), Kimberly O’Donnell (Garry), Paul Lobe, and Noel Lobe (Katie).
Betty had a dream and a passion, and in time she and Bob opened the Lighthouse Christian Bookstore. They grew friendships with people from all walks of life and denominations that continued through the decades.
Betty is the cherished grandmother of multiple grandchildren, predeceased by her Grandson, Pte. Luke James Tresham (2010) and many precious great-grandchildren.
Betty had a wonderful gift of hospitality and, over the years, gathered a wealth of friends that she cherished and treated like family. Betty was jokingly referred to as the “Mayor of the Manor” (McConnell Manor), where she spent her remaining years. She was loved by many and enjoyed keeping everyone in line!
Betty’s family extends our gratitude to Dr. Panesar, Dr. Yu, the hospital staff, and the organization Nurse Next Door for treating her with compassion and humanity.
With heartfelt appreciation for Noel and Katie Lobe. Who comforted and held her hand until her passing.
In keeping with her request, cremation will occur, Monday, April 5, 2021.
Due to COVID- 19 restrictions, a Memorial Service will be held later.
