Carol Ann Potts
March 15, 1937 – December 8, 2020
Carol Potts passed away peacefully in her sleep at the Cornwall Community Hospital December 8, 2020. She is survived by her husband of 58 years and her loving children, Susan (Michael) and Jeffrey (Tina) and her grandchildren Sophie Sharp and Mac Sharp. Carol was a student at Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School and a 1958 graduate of the School of Nursing at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. Along with several other graduates she headed west to Calgary and returned east to Cornwall, her hometown, where she met her future husband Walter, and was married on May 12, 1962. Walter retired from Ontario Hydro while an operator at Saunders Generating Station in 1967 and graduated from Carleton University with a Bachelor of History Degree. While Walter was busy changing his career path, Carol was employed as a nurse by the SD&G Counties as a Public Health Nurse. She subsequently became a Nursing Teacher and a High School teacher before accepting the position of Head of the Admitting Department at Hotel Dieu before retiring in 1994. She was interested in many sports – swimming, volleyball and basketball as well as skating, skiing and curling. She was an assistant coach with her husband Walter who was the CCVS girls’ coach which delivered four teams to the OFSSA curling championships. She also was the first Female Curl Canada instructor in the Cornwall area and won many trophies in curling competitions in Ontario and Quebec. After giving up sports she became President of the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Historical Society branch of the Cornwall Community Museum. She was one of the first volunteers of the Tri-County Literacy Council where she spent time as an avid promoter of literacy for thirty years and was chair of the Board during the last 15 years of membership. Carol believed that it was her duty to give back to the community in appreciation for what Cornwall had given her during her years as a resident. She was a generous person, always ready to help those in need. Due to current restrictions, a Celebration of Life will occur at a later date in Cornwall. As an expression of sympathy donations to the Tri-County Literacy Council or Carefor Hospice Cornwall would be appreciated.
