Clarice Myrtle Neill (Alguire)
It is with sadness that our family announces her passing on Sunday, June 18, 2023 at Sunset Cove Retirement Home, at the age of 99 years. Beloved wife for 47 years of the late Norman Neill. Loving mother of Helen Lee (Keith) of Ottawa, Phyllis Bateman (Joe St. Denis) of Cornwall, Peggy Mazey (Ron) of Sudbury, Elizabeth Ritchie (Kevin) of Carp, and Marjorie Neill of Cornwall. Cherished Grandma of Erin Bateman (Simon Snoxell), Neil Mazey (Mary Ann), Lana Neill, Erica Michielsen (Lucas) and Kelvin Lee (Anna Boateng). Proud Great-Grandma to Oliver, Lizzie and Anna Snoxell, Miles Mazey, Bronson McAneney, and Leon, Stevie, Brooks, Seger and Van Michielsen. She will also be deeply missed by her daughter-in-law Janice James. Predeceased by her only son John, and by her parents Clarence and Viola Alguire (Kemp).
Clarice was born in Cornwall Centre in 1924 and attended CCVS high school, before then obtaining her teaching certification from Normal School in Ottawa. Her teaching career started during WW2 in 1942 and she taught grades 1 to 8 in a one room school near Avonmore. By 1944, Clarice had married, and devoted the following years to raising their family of 6 on the South Branch Road. She resumed her career in 1965, teaching technical math in the Retraining Program at what would later become St. Lawrence College. She never forgot a student’s name and she was very much respected by all her pupils over the years. After retirement in 1981, she enjoyed travelling and also remained active in her community, church and seniors groups. Clarice was a loyal friend to many and a dedicated, caring neighbour. She was an avid gardener, square dancer, quilter, Scrabble champ, legendary pie maker, and a gracious hostess to all who stopped in to visit. There was always room for one more at the table. Clarice’s century of life in Cornwall ensured that there was often only six degrees of separation between her and someone you knew in common!
Funeral arrangements under the care of Wilsons Funeral Home, Cornwall, ON. Cremation has taken place and a private graveside committal will take place in Woodlawn cemetery. A Celebration of Life is planned for July 10 at City Limits, Eamers Corners, between the hours of 1:30 and 4:30. Wheelchair accessible.
As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to the Cornwall Hospice or charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
