Donald Joseph MacPhee
Tuesday, November 8th, 1938 – Sunday, January 23rd, 2022
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden, unexpected passing of Donald Joseph MacPhee at his home in Alexandria at the age of 83. He was born November 8, 1938 in Alexandria, the son of the late Donald Edward and Mary Frances MacPhee.
Donald was the husband of the recently deceased Ann MacPhee and father of Mary Beth Barrans of Kanata.
Donald was brother to Marian McDonald (late Eddy) of Michigan, the late John James MacPhee (late Alison) of Ottawa, Catherine Olive Defreitas (Roger) of Long Sault, Madeline vander Zweep (Hans) of Ingleside, and Lucy McIntosh (late Donald) of St. Andrews. He also leaves behind many devoted nieces and nephews.
Donald Joseph left Glengarry in the late 50’s and worked in Pembroke and Toronto before returning home to Alexandria with Ann in 1974. Music, specifically the fiddle, was always a big part of Donald’s life. His mother played the piano, his brother Johnny played the banjo, and his sister Catherine played the piano. There was always music at the MacPhee’s house.
Donald was a founding member of the Glengarry Strathspey and Reel Society; he was inducted into the Glengarry Celtic Music Hall of Fame in 2004; he also taught the Celtic fiddle two nights a week at the Glengarry District High School for 40 years before the pandemic.
Donald and Ann made many trips to Cape Breton to attend the Fiddle Festivals at St. Ann’s Gallic College and made many friends there.
Glengarry has lost a bastion for the encouragement and advancement of Celtic music and his gentle nature, friendliness, wit, and talent will be greatly missed by all who know and love him.
At the request of the family, cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Finnan’s Basilica on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at 2 pm. Interment will be held at a later date.
The Funeral Mass will be live streamed and recorded, please follow this link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCF5iF-wmvhJeQ-88fR_zkJw to view the Mass.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Munro & Morris Funeral Homes Ltd., 114 Main St. South, Alexandria (613-525-2772).
As expressions of sympathy Memorial Donations to the Celtic Music Hall of Fame, Glengarry Memorial Hospital Foundation or the Ottawa Civic Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
As a Memorial to Donald Joseph, a tree will be planted in a memory woods. A tree grows – memories grow.
