Edith Poppe

POPPE, Edith
1945-2019

It is with profound sadness that the family of Edith Hedwig (Stierli) Poppe announces her passing. Surrounded by love, Edith passed away peacefully at the Wellington Hospice on Sunday, November 10, at the age of 74 years, after battling pancreatic cancer. She was born on May 18, 1945 in Waldkirch, Switzerland, to Peter and Hedy (Gubser) Stierli. The Stierli family emigrated to Sweetsburg, Quebec in 1960, and soon after settled in Dunham, where Edith spent her formative years on the family farm. While working as a server at The Swiss Inn in Morin Heights, Quebec, Edith would meet her soul mate, Frank Poppe; the two were married on April 1, 1978. In 1985, they made the move to Cornwall, Ontario, and raised their two boys there, having purchased the popular and cherished Archie’s Golf Course with their business partners. After almost twenty years, Frank and Edith said goodbye to the golf course and happily began the next phase of their lives together: Retirement.
Pre-deceased by her parents, Edith is survived by her loving husband, and her two sons, Philip (Mylissa) of Milton and Michael (Jackie) of Toronto. She is remembered with love as “Grandma” by Mason, Sloan, and Lindyn. The grief of Edith’s passing is also shared by her siblings: brothers, Peter Jr. (late Betty), of Sutton, PQ, and Werner (Jeanette) of West Brome, PQ; and sisters, Blanca, of Männedorf, Switzerland, and Gaby (Philippe) of Le Mont-sur-Lausanne, Switzerland. She is loved and will be greatly missed by her many nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.
Edith was a loving and dedicated mother, wife, and sister, who always put her family first. She treasured her two sons and especially loved her role as Grandma. In 2018, she and Frank made the move from Cornwall, Ontario to Guelph, to be closer to family and to watch their grandchildren grow. Edith and Frank loved to travel together and experienced much of the world’s beauty and culture. Edith always loved to host friends and family in their home and took special care to ensure every guest felt welcomed and valued.
Please join us to celebrate Edith’s life on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at 12 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 139 Martin St., Milton, Ontario. Interment will be held in Cowansville, Quebec, in the Spring of 2020.  At Edith’s request, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to Wellington Hospice, 795 Scottsdale Drive, Guelph, Ontario.
