Elfriede Freda Gudelis

October 30, 2019

GUDELIS, Freda (née Wolff) – Freda Gudelis (Mimsy) 1926 – 2019 on Wednesday, October 30th, 2019 at Carefor Hospice Cornwall with her loving family by her side, Freda (Elfriede Wolff) departed this world to join her husband Jonas Gudelis in heavenly repose.  Immigrating to Canada from Europe to begin a new life after the hardships of WW2, they settled in Cornwall in 1950.  Our mother was a true matriarch of the family; a tireless worker, capable of handling half a dozen things at a time with true proficiency.  Organized, determined and driven, she raised a family whilst holding down many part time jobs over the years, finally retiring from her favourite job at Sears where she worked at the chocolate counter. We were entirely fortunate to be the beneficiaries of her cooking and baking over our lifetime.  Every holiday and event was celebrated with feast and flourish.  Mimsy was the captain of her own ship and set her own course, sometimes to her detriment, yet always had the incredible strength and resiliency to recover.  Her mind was as sharp as her tongue, yet she was authentic, honest, caring and stylish.  She never sat still and in spite of many health issues, lived in her home and took care of herself until a heart attack, and then a fall, finally brought her to her knees over the past few months.  Mimsy suffered a lot in her lifetime, and indeed, the end was fraught with pain.  She braved this like the warrior she was.  There is no question as to how much she loved her family and how very much we loved her in return.  It seems impossible to think of our lives without her constant presence and support.  She leaves behind her doting children: Diana Shayler, Linda Adams, and Jonas Gudelis Jr.; much loved sons-in-law, Sean Adams and Ranny Shayler; and wonderful daughter-in-law Rachel (Martineau).  A fantastic Oma to Trevor and Christie Shayler, Nikolai Adams, and Markus Gudelis. Dear sister of Katharina Sauve (Ernst Stabenow); Tante to the Zaczyk, Sauve and Paschek families, and Lomb family of Germany. Lovingly remembered by Annie Adams and family, and dear friend Klara Schapoks. Predeceased by dear niece Gaby, sisters Martha, Dora, Ida, brother Rudolf and her parents.  A private viewing was held at Wilson Funeral Home with burial at St. Lawrence Valley Cemetery.  We would like to thank Dr. Poilly and the nursing staff and volunteers of Carefor Hospice Cornwall for their beautiful care, compassion and providing such a nurturing environment for her last day here along with a sendoff we will never forget; Dr. Cookson and Dr. Shah for their care and support; Wilson Funeral Home; and Father Kevin Maloney for blessing our Mimsy. If so desired, donations to Carefor Hospice Cornwall would be appreciated. In Gottes Armen.  Funeral arrangements entrusted to Wilson Funeral Home 822 Pitt Street, Cornwall.  Online messages of condolence may be made in the obituary section of www.wilsonfuneralhome.ca
