Ellis Barclay

It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Ellis Weldon Barclay at the Glen-Stor-Dun Lodge on Friday, November 12, 2021, at the age of 84. Beloved husband of the late Carolyn (Vanhorne) Barclay. Loving father of Laura Barclay Herod (Jason) and Sarah Barclay Thomas (Eric). Adored grandfather of Lauren and Ariel Thomas and Luke Herod. Sadly missed by his brother Paul Barclay (Carol) of Ottawa. Predeceased by his parents Weldon and Grace (Poole) Barclay and his brother Winston (Jorja). He will be missed by his nieces and nephews and their families along with many friends, colleagues, and past students. Ellis was a devoted and kind husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He will be remembered as a wonderful CCVS English teacher, Queen’s graduate, pianist, sprinter, skier, walker, traveller, bridge player, swimmer, reader, storyteller, church member, volunteer, tennis player, cyclist, poet, canoeist, and a romantic. To honour our father and his love of teaching English, a memorial scholarship will be created to be awarded yearly to a CCVS student. A charitable donation towards the Ellis Barclay Memorial Scholarship may be sent directly to CCVS, 437 Sydney Street, Cornwall, Ontario, K6H 3H9. Giving to the Alzheimer’s Society, Heart and Stroke or any charity of choice would be a lovely gesture. To honour Ellis’ wishes cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited to visit at St. John’s Presbyterian Church 28 Second St. East, Cornwall on Friday, December 10, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A celebration of Ellis’ life will take place on Saturday, December 11, at 11:00 am at St. John’s with Reverend Adams officiating; a luncheon will follow. A Committal at St. Lawrence Valley Cemetery will take place in the summer. In keeping with current guidelines, attendees must show proof of double vaccination. Please send an RSVP to the church (613-932-8693) or admin@stjohnscornwall.ca to help us get an idea of numbers attending the wake and/or funeral (luncheon). In the words of our dearest Dad, “Parting is such sweet sorrow…Carpe Diem.”
