Howard Kenneth MacLennan (Ken)
Passed away peacefully at Mill Creek Care Centre, Barrie on Saturday, July 11, 2020 at the age of 91. Ken was born Howard Kenneth MacLennan September 3, 1928 to the late Hugh Howard MacLennan and Muriel May (nee Warner) of Glengarry.
Ken attended #10 South Branch Public School then Cornwall Collegiate & Vocational School. Ken continued his post-secondary education at Ottawa Normal School. Having a voracious appetite for learning, he continued his studies at Queens University where he graduated with a B.A. and obtained his Masters in Education from the University of Toronto.
His life-long career in education began in 1954 with his first teaching assignments at #14 Charlottenburgh, East and West Front Public Schools. He became a Principal at Bonville Public School in 1955, while also serving as Supervising Principal and Secretary Treasure for Cornwall Township from 1959-1968.
In 1990 Ken would retire from the SD&G County Board of Education where he had been the Superintendent of Education from 1971-1990.
During his retirement, Ken enjoyed the chilly Canadian winters in Florida, and joined, PROBUS, Focus Art and the Seaway Seniors Club. He continued his love of learning well into his later years. Ken relentlessly lobbied the Ontario Government for a single school system for all, regardless of religion and was also a strong advocate for seniors’ rights; All the while enjoying his new love of painting and a few rounds of his beloved sport of golf on the course he and his brother Dwayne co-founded in 1963.
Ken is survived by his sons Murray (Jill) their children Cameron and Hunter; David (Caroline) their children Dexton and Connor. His nephew Rory (Kathy), and niece Jill Slaney (Dean). Ken was pre- deceased by his brother Warner “Dwayne” MacLennan (late Jean Matheson).
A family service will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery where Ken will be laid to rest with his parents.
