Ian MacNeil

MacNEIL, Ian Francis- April 1st, 1947 – March 27th, 2020

Passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Hospital General Campus, on Friday March 27, 2020, just shy of his 73rd Birthday. Ian will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 33 years, Sharon (nee Lawford). He will be deeply missed by his son, John Cameron MacNeil (Stephanie) and stepchild, Carrie Lawford, his three very special grandchildren; Claire, Kira and Camden (proud first grandson), siblings Shaun MacNeil (Rosemary), Myron MacNeil (Lillian), Margaret DeZan (Carlo), and Colette MacNeil. He will be fondly remembered by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and dearest friend, Ron Derraugh (Joyce). Predeceased by his parents John and Veronica (nee Morrison) MacNeil, siblings Loraine MacDonald (Gregory), and Blaine MacNeil (Emma), and stepson David Lawford (Alycia). Born in New Waterford, Cape Breton, Ian attended Belle River High School after moving to Ontario. He was an avid fan of sports, playing lob ball at the Riverside Sportsman Club and with Cape Breton Lob Ball in his younger years. Ian relocated to Hawksbury, ON in 1974 to work for Pittsburgh Paint and Glass (PPG), retiring after 37 years. He was a member of the Canadian Autoworkers union. He was an avid sports fan, a lifelong fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs (Gilmour era), the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. We always hoped he would get to see the Leafs win another cup in his lifetime. Ian enjoyed playing golf at Cedar Glen in Williamsburg, ON, crossword puzzles, his convertible sports car. Most of all, Ian loved his grandchildren and would light up at their excitement each time he handed them a tiny box of Smarties. The family would like to express our thanks to the Ottawa General Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit nursing staff, and Dr. Andrew Seely. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ottawa Hospital Foundation. Private funeral arrangements to follow at a later date.
