Died Wednesday, January 5, 2022 at Cornwall Community Hospital with family by his side, age 89 years. Born in Klein Dongen, Holland, he emigrated to Canada in June, 1960 with his wife, Hendrika (nee Van Beek) and young daughter, Corry.

Joe worked in a variety of occupations upon arrival in Canada. He first worked in construction and developed accomplished skills in home construction and renovation, becoming well known in the Berwick area as a jack of all trades. He was the owner/operator of his own farm for many years and finished his work life with West Front Construction upon retirement in 1990. Joe continued to enjoy completing projects at home for himself and in support of his family throughout his retired years.

Joe was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Hendrika Rutters and by his second wife Theresa Van Dongen. He was also predeceased by his parents and by 10 siblings. Joe was dear father of Corry Witteveen and her husband John of Ingleside and of Adrian (Joe) and his wife Susan of Crysler. Loving grandfather to Kimberly Douma (Jason), Kevin Witteveen (Koryn), Grayson Rutters and Barrett Rutters. Loved great-grandfather to Trenton, Carter, Darcy and Britten. Joe is survived by his brother Clem Rutters (Mary) of Long Sault, by brother Ton of Holland and by many nieces and nephews.

Joe is also fondly remembered by his 10 step-children, of whom he particularly enjoyed recent visits and conversations with Margaret, Mary-Ellen (Dennis) and Anne. Joe enjoyed excellent support from health care providers in recent years and was thankful for care from Dr. Martin Racine, Personal Support Worker Anna Jamieson, the Ottawa Cancer Clinic, staff at Sunset Cove Retirement Residence and staff at Cornwall Community Hospital.

A celebration of Joe’s life will be planned for the spring. Memorial donations may be directed to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be directed to www.brownleefuneralhomes.com
