ROUNDPOINT, Julia M.S.
AKWESASNE – Julia Mary Sarah Roundpoint, 83, of Seymour Road, Cornwall Island unexpectedly passed away early Tuesday morning, April 26, 2022, at Ottawa General Hospital where she was under the exceptionally supportive and loving care of doctors and nurses in the ICU.
Julia was born on May 21, 1938 in Cornwall, the daughter of the late Alex “Sakoiewata” and Cecelia “Kahontineshon” (Lefebvre) Hopps. She attended schools on Cornwall Island and graduated from St. Andrew’s High School. She continued her education earning her degree in nursing from St. Joseph’s Nursing School. On August 8, 1959, she married Benny L. Roundpoint at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Jacobs, officiating. He predeceased her on January 10, 1996.
After completing nursing school, Julia worked as a Graduate Nurse at Hotel Dieu Hospital until starting her family, dedicating many years to raising her nine children. After her children were grown, she returned to school to further her studies at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario to become a Community Health Representative working for Mohawk Council of Akwesasne for over 20 years. Julia was a lifelong communicant of St. Regis Catholic Mission Church and a faithful believer in the power of prayer and miracles. She had many enjoyments in her life, but greatly enjoyed quilting, sewing, cooking, gardening, reading a good book, traveling, a good game of cards, and playing Radio Bingo. Julia enjoyed making baskets, while working with her sister Florence, teaching the art of basket making at the Akwesasne Library and Cultural Center. She was also one of the founding members of the Tri-District Elders Center. Of all her enjoyments, her greatest was planning, hosting, and visiting during many family functions and celebrations.
Julia leaves behind a great legacy of family with her nine children, Debbie (Peter) Mayer of Cornwall; Donna Roundpoint, Joy Roundpoint, Joan (Robert) Lazore, Patty (Peter) Francis, Lynn (Kenneth) Roundpoint Chaussi, Benjamin (Mary Jacobs) Roundpoint, Robert (Lisa) Roundpoint, and Edward (Tina) Roundpoint, all of Akwesasne; her 20 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren; her sister, Alice Jacobs of Akwesasne and a sister in-law Shirley Jacobs of St. Regis and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by her sisters, Florence B. Benedict and Marita Skidders; and her brothers, Joseph Harry Pyke and one in infancy.
Friends may call at the Tri-District Elders Center beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Monday until 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 4 at St. Regis Catholic Church with burial following in St. Lawrence Cemetery. Face coverings are required for all in attendance at the visitation and funeral mass.
Throughout her life, Julia has been a strong supporter of Catholic Missions, her family wishes for those that wish to honor her life to please consider memorial contributions to the St. Kateri Tekakwitha Heritage Fund at the St. Regis Catholic Mission Church or the Tri-District Elders Center.
Her family wishes to thank the caring and supportive medical staff in the Emergency Room and ICU at Cornwall Community Hospital and later at the Ottawa General Hospital for the care they provided to their mother and the love and compassion shown to them during her final days.
