Lia Da Prat

10 March, 1937 – 12 January, 2022

Lia Da Prat (née Toffolo), 84 years, passed away peacefully on January 12 in her home in Cornwall, ON surrounded by her husband Edo, daughters Cynthia and Christine, and her six grandchildren, Matteo, Luca, Alessandro, Elena, Grazia, and Daniela.

Lia was the beloved wife of Edo who shared a life through 58 years of marriage. She came to Canada in 1964 from the small town of Arba in Northern Italy. They had two devoted daughters, Cynthia and Christine and son-in-laws, Tony and Chris who loved her dearly. Together, Lia and Edo welcomed Matteo, Luca, Alessandro, Elena, Grazia, and Daniela who literally worshipped their much loved “Nonni.”

Lia and Edo and Edo’s brother the late Angelo and his wife, Carla, built a successful construction business that operated for over 50 years. While fiercely proud of her Italian roots, Lia quickly made Cornwall her home. She was a devoted Catholic and an active member of the Blessed Sacrament Church and a sports enthusiast, cheering as much for her Cornwall Royals hockey team as she did for her AC Milan soccer team in Italy. Lia and Edo loved to travel and were fortunate to visit many countries across Europe, Asia and the middle East.

Lia was known as a deeply generous soul, a caring person, and a great cook of the finest Italian cuisine that she would share as quickly with a stranger as she would with a long-time friend. Some of her most favourite memories were cooking her grandchildren’s favourite “patatine” and listening with pride and admiration as they spoke to her in her first language of Friulan and learned the culture of her hometown, Arba.

Lia’s passing was as peaceful as it was beautiful, with her daughters, husband, and grandchildren making sure she was never alone. A particularly poignant memory of her passing was when the grandchildren helped their “Nonno” Edo give a final kiss goodbye to his wife of 58 years.

A heart felt thank you to all the health professionals who helped make Lia’s journey peaceful and serene. A special mention of her physician Dr. Di Cintio and family friends Dr. Mireille Lecours of PEI and Dr. Tanya Di Valentin of Ottawa who all offered their compassion and wisdom, day and night. Our sincere appreciation to Paramedic Sophie Tasse, Patrick, Nathalie, Melissa and Ashley, of the Nurse Next Door team who made our choice for Lia to be with us in her home a reality.
