Robert Edwin Laplante

It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Robert E. (Bob) LaPlante on Wednesday, August 23rd, age 87.

Bob leaves behind his 3 devoted daughters, Karen Hunt (Brendon), Robin Rankin (Paul), and Lynn Skirrow-Poeltl (Mike), along with his 5 grandchildren, Murray, Jenny, Alex, Sam and Emily and 11 great grandchildren. Also left to mourn is his former spouse, Elizabeth (Libby) Stewart.  Predeceased by his parents Edwin and Ruby LaPlante (Cobb).

Born and raised in Cornwall, Bob was a founding partner of M.S. Thompson & Associates, and was the lead project manager on many prominent local buildings including City Hall, the Cornwall Civic Complex, numerous schools and office complexes located in Eastern Ontario.  Early in his career, he spent many years travelling throughout the U.S. and Europe spearheading construction projects for Lonza Group which fostered deep and lasting personal friendships.

His entrepreneurial spirit throughout the years saw his ownership of other local businesses such as the Comfort Inn, Harvey’s Restaurant, and First Cornwall Place office complex at 132 Second Street East.

Bob had a number of personal interests, however none more prominent than tending to his large property in Long Sault, as well as being a jazz aficionado, amassing a huge collection of jazz albums, and travelling far and wide to attend concerts.

In the latter years, Bob enjoyed travelling throughout Europe, and the sunny south with his dear friend, Pat Pellegrino at his side.

Please join us in a celebration of Bob’s storied life on Friday, September 1st at the Ramada Inn from 1:00 to 4:00

In consideration of Bob’s long tenure on the Cornwall Hospital Board of Trustees, the family would suggest that in lieu of flowers, a donation in memory of Bob to the Cornwall Hospital Foundation, or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Ontario would be greatly appreciated.
