Sister Rosemarie Kugel died peacefully at the Sisters of Providence Motherhouse, Kingston, Ontario on November 10, 2020. Sister was 93 years of age of which 64 years were spent in Religious Life. Sister Kugel was born in Argonne, Wisconsin the daughter of Anna Kubs and Thomas Kugel. Sister was predeceased by her parents, brothers Leo and Leonard, and her sister, Angeline Klusmann and survived by her loving nieces and nephews.

On February 12, 1954 Rosemarie entered the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph at Mount St. Joseph, Perth Road, ON making final profession at the RHSJ Motherhouse in Montreal on February 22, 1959.

Sister spent her career in the health care field and in congregation administrative positions. In 1981 she was appointed Provincial Superior of St. Joseph Province which consisted of 10 Local RHSJ communities throughout Canada the U.S. and the Dominican Republic, as well as the Sisters at the Formation Centre in Arnprior, ON. In 1981 St. Joseph Province had 122 Sisters.

In 1989 Sister Kugel became the President of the RHSJ Health System which consisted of overseeing the operations of 20 facilities in Canada and the US. This was a particularly trying time for healthcare in Canada. During the 1990s hospital restructuring impacted RHSJ institutions in New Brunswick and Ontario and Sister Kugel was very active in ensuring the healing mission of the RHSJs continued. She was particularly active in the opposition to the Ontario Health Services Restructuring Commission’s recommendation to close Hotel Dieu Hospital, Kingston, and she was the public face of the RHSJs during the “Save the Dieu” campaign. Sister retired from this position in 2008 but continued on various Boards and Committees.

Throughout her life Sister Kugel made tremendous contributions to the Congregation and to the RHSJ Health Care institutions.
