William “Bill” MacGillis
William Andrew MacGillis
1942-2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of William “Bill” MacGillis at the Lancaster Long Term Care Home on Sunday, January 26, 2025 at the age of 81 years. Beloved husband of Eileen (nee Brown) and loving father of Michael (Rhona), Blair (Stephanie) and Jennifer Bellefeuille (Joel). Cherished grandfather of Riley, Abigail, Corey, Juliet, Nathan, Gavin and Curtis. He will be sadly missed by his brothers; Jack, Frank, Bernie, and Jimmy, and his beloved sister Mary. Bill leaves behind to mourn many extended family members and cherished friends and neighbours.
Predeceased by his parents William A. MacGillis and Christena (nee MacDonell), and sadly predeceased recently by his wonderful daughter-in-law Rhona.
Bill was raised in a fun-loving household. His parents were progressive farmers, being the first to own a tractor, the first car, the first self-propelled combine, the first radio and the first binder with a knotter.
Bill took over the farm in 1970, where Eileen and Bill raised their family in the same kind of environment that Bill himself was raised in. Although his father was retired, he would often be at the farm to help his son drive the tractors during the seeding, hay and harvesting season. After years of hard work on the dairy farm, Bill retired from the cows in 1990 but kept active working part-time at Home Depot in Cornwall. Working there brought him a lot of joy and fueled many of Bill’s famous stories next to the fire pit and to his last joyful days.
If you knew Bill, know that he loved all the wonderful conversations and laughs shared. He left this world happy and still telling stories. We look forward to sharing all the stories you have of Bill.
Visitations will be held at the Munro & Morris Funeral Home Ltd., (114 Main Street South, Alexandria) on Friday February 7th from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm and Saturday February 8th from 9 to 10:30. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Finnan’s Basilica on Saturday, February 8th, 2025, at 11am. The burial will be held at a later date. For those who wish, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Glengarry Memorial Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
