CORNWALL, Ontario – On Thursday, May 30 Centre 105, located at Trinity Anglican Church, held a fundraiser to help keep their kitchen stocked and their patrons stomachs full.
Centre 105 runs a breakfast program on weekdays and the Centre’s Director Peter Czaly said that program is important not just for providing nutrition, but also because of the social connections it offers.
“There are people in Cornwall struggling to make ends meet and we are trying to help them meet their food needs,” said Czaly. “Also, it gives them a place to go in the morning. They can watch TV, read the newspaper and talk to other people.”
Czaly states that the food budget for the Centre is $20,000 annually. On Thursday morning, he had already received $2,000 in mail in donations and an additional $1,000 donation from the Cornwall Optimists Club.
There were more than 60 people who turned out to Thursday morning’s fundraiser and Czaly was thrilled.
“It has bee a really good turnout. I’m delighted,” he said. “It is our first attempt at a major fundraiser and I think it is a success. I budgeted for 60 people and we are already over that.”
Czaly explained that he tries to partner closely with the Agape Centre soup kitchen.
“We do breakfast, and they do lunch. That’s two meals a day covered,” he said.
