CORNWALL, Ontario – Cheers of excitement could be heard from Pitt St. between First St. and Second St. on Saturday, Sept. 14 during the Lions Club annual Bed Races.

Multiple teams gathered to represent various businesses, schools and organizations, all adoring team costumes with matching beds. The event saw a total of 26 sponsors.

“It’s all a part of the fun; they decorate the bed and decorate themselves,” said Bill Swinden of the Lions Club.

Swinden explained that based on race points, a winning would be determined and hold the honour of having their name on a Lions Club trophy that will be housed at the Cornwall Civic Complex. Additionally, $1,000 would be donated to Rachel’s Kids House of Hope in the name of Lily Douglas. Douglas lost her courageous battle with cancer earlier this year at the age of 7. Many participants wore #LilyStrong t-shirts showing their support.

“(Rachel’s Kids) will identify a child with cancer in this area and the money will go to them,” said Roger Lee of the Lions Club.

Additional funding will support various agencies the Lions Club contributes to, like the Benson Centre.

A spaghetti dinner and comedy show were held following the event at the Knights of Columbus.
