CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall youths got a course in sustainability and fishing at the Ontario Power Generation (OPG) visitors centre in Cornwall on Saturday, June 15, 2019.

The day’s presentation was made by TackleShare, an organization dedicated to the education around fishing that operates through the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and OPG.

TackleShare has 140 learner sites across Ontario where residents can go to learn about fishing and borrow fishing gear, the same way you would borrow a book from the library.

“Our sites get people started with basic fishing equipment and it is designed to get people started,” said Kat Faouaz of TackleShare.

The educational seminar at OPG on Saturday involved teaching kids about water safety, cold water and warm water habitats and the fish who live in them, and awareness about invasive species in the St. Lawrence River.

“With fishing, it is about conservation. A balance needs to be made,” said Faouaz. “The best way to keep the public engaged is to be a part of it and fishing is a good way to do that.”
