AKWESASNE – Two Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service (AMPS) officers were injured while monitoring a protest early in the morning on Saturday, Feb. 23.
The protest began at around 8:30 p.m. on Friday in front of the AMPS office in Akwesasne. According to AMPS, at around 2 a.m., officers monitoring the protest were confronted by protesters and two officers sustained minor injuries.
“Our officers displayed professionalism in this difficult situation, while maintaining peace and order,” AMPS said in a statement to media. The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service strives to continue working with Akwesasronon in maintaining peace and balance for the community. The AMPS have received an overwhelming amount of emails, messages and phone calls from community members thanking the police and commending their efforts, in addition to donations of food and coffee for the officers; we would like to express gratitude for the continued support and thoughtfulness.”
The protest was in response to an AMPS raid that occurred earlier on Friday, Feb. 22 on the recreational cannabis dispensary, the Wild Flower Cannabis Dispensary.
AMPS state that they will continue to investigate the incident.
