MORRISBURG, Ontario – In honour of Valentine’s Day and self-love, locals can enjoy the reading of Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues at the Upper Canada Play House at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15.
“It’s definitely worth seeing, at least once in your life,” said Angela Vinet, Executive Director of Sexual Assault Support Services for Women of SDG&A. Vinet explained that although the event has taken place in the community for about 10 years now, this year’s performance is a bit different as it is being performed at the Playhouse for the first time.
“It’s an intimate setting for an intimate play,” she said.
Ensler’s work encapsulates the stories of individuals from across the world, all focusing on women’s health. The play discusses topics such as childbearing, giving birth, menstruation, relationships and more. Ensler, who traveled the globe and interviewed women about a range of intimate topics, shares their stories — some traumatic, funny or beautiful.
Tickets to the event can be purchased at SASS by calling 613-932-1755, and are also available for purchase at Echo Trends, Simply Jennifer and Tilly’s Eatery and Delicatessen. They will also be available at the door of the event and will be offered on a sliding scale for those who can not afford to pay full price.
“(The play) creates a sense of community with women…every woman can relate to a different moment, or say ‘this has happened to me’, or say ‘I feel that way’,” said Vinet, explaining it encourages validation and awareness.
